Edward Lorenz, 1917 - 2008

Just a couple of weeks after the passing of Arthur Clarke, the world has lost another great thinker. Edward Lorenz passed away this morning; the early insights of Dr. Lorenz are fundamental to not only modern meteorology and fluid dynamics, but also chaos theory, complexity analysis, and the ubiquitous notion of the strange attractor, pictured above. His work provided a significant contribution to my thought processes when I was trying to decide on research projects during my early days as a graduate student.
