Arthur C. Clarke: 1917-2008

Arthur C. Clarke died today at the age of 90. 2001 only scratches the surface in examining the influence that he had on science fiction, science, the space generation and popular culture. I had the privilege of hearing him speak at a conference (via video) at the Earth Systems Symposium at MIT a few years ago. What I remember most from his talk were the numerous times that he touched upon a subject that resonated with a research idea that I had been contemplating, but I usually thought that the idea was not 'doable'. Hearing him discuss some of these same concepts, and not only focusing on the feasibility but also the necessity of pursuing these ideas, is something that I still draw from.
