Aug2011 South American vegetation stress

Two maps below underscore the surface biophysical stress exhibited on 2nd crop activity in Brazil's Centre-South & northeastern Argentina.

The leaf area index can be used as a proxy for vegetation stress during certain stages in the crop cycle (focusing on grains & oilseeds), and reanalysis supports this measure as a reliable indicator for identifying yield limitations.  The map below derived from NASA's MERRA archives.


The map below (from Weather Trends) shows Aug2011 precip vs. normal, highlighting the moisture deficiency in the noted commercial crop regions.
